I've been really busy

Even though I'm making the bills (most of them), it is very tiring having to work 3 part time jobs to make ends meet.  Half the time I forget what planet I'm on.

I have had some time off this holiday (if you want to call it that), and have been catching up on sleep, writing, etc.

One thing I whipped up over the past two weeks was my own "History of the Japanese DDR community/scene".  It is now a 99 page monster of an essay with pics and all, but feel free to check it out if you have some hours to kill.

*warning* I'm not much of a writer:

Other than that, I've got really crappy eyesight, but people already knew that.  It kind of peaked in crappiness recently, but I am used to it, so no biggy.  (20/200 in left eye, 20/800 in right with correction, cornea thickness 475 and 480 respectively so I can't get Lasik to fix it, but "PRK" is possible, maybe)

My son is getting big and energetic and active and destructive, so yay.  Also, AIJ will be 12 years old this year, so yay.  I'll need to whip up some shirts or something on cafepress or whatever is hot right now.

Oh dear. Something silly evolving to death threats

So it seems a video involving a few of my friends that caught a parent/child combo being idiots got onto mixi, then nico douga, then youtube and the J-internet and then Kotaku helped spread this around so much that there are actually death threats against not only the father in the video, but against NOB (the guy playing) as well?

Description from Akudaikan:
ACCIDENT!! The kid that plays planks constantly while somebody playing DDR and his father that lack of moral values

This happened while NOB playing in Odaiba on 10.17 evening.

0'04" The kid appeared nearby(on the right).
0'29" The kid appeared from right side again and played a prank on NOB.
0'51" His father acrossed in front of the camera on purpose(?).
0'56" The kid ran crossed between NOB and armrests from right side just because it's fun.
0'58" His brother also wanted to do that, but was stopped by the worker on the right(The worker noticed him it's dangerous).
1'19" The kids' parents were talking about something while approaching from the left.
1'34" The father acrossed the camera, shouted insult at the worker and started giving trouble.

Notice the left side in the end of the clip, it's obvious that this family just made trouble on purpose.
By the way, the photographer was forced to stop recording in order to conciliate.

Dots and more dots

On a whim (and suggestion because of my drastic reduction in eyesight), I looked into braille but I can't "read" it at all. My finger runs over it and all I get is "Ooh, that feels kind of nice".

How do people learn to read this? Just years of conditioning your fingers to be able to distinguish the dot patterns?

Grate Brain Shift

So yeah, job search hasn't been going so well. Pretty awful, actually. Awful to the point I've exhausted all the unemployment the J-gov is going to give me ever, and a recruiter told me I was out of work so long I was unemployable. Yeah, pretty bad.

Anyways, I am applying for a bunch of part time jobs, at least until something in this God-forsaken market turns up for me. You know, the ones like service level, family restaurant, meant-for-high school kids jobs. It can't and won't pay the bills, but it will slow the rapid bleed of the last of the savings. I'm still pissed they don't pay you for giving blood in this country. Crime is looking like a mighty attractive option right now, actually.

I'm not homeless though...yet. Ask again in a month or two.

The Grate Update

Usually I have just been throwing stuff at Facebook and I have been ignoring my lj, but in brief:

* I put up a bunch of videos of my solving some of my cubes on youtube. Some have music!

- VCube 7 with Yakety Sax - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9R7_2amXAY
- Megaminx with the Big Dog Waltz - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtjhP9h44qs

* Still unemployed. I would use the words "completely desperate" but I think the long term unemployment just makes me not care anymore

* I put on a pedometer and got to 100,000 "steps" in 4 days. Mostly from walking my son great distances.

Next AIJ Meetup (Sat. April 24)

Ah right, never posted this on lj.

Just relaying what Akudaikan confirmed. I'll try to make it, though money is a bit of a problem right now.

Date : Sat. April 24th, 2010
Time : 8PM, Ikebukuro East Exit (near the Seibu Exit)
Where : Dontei (Ikebukuro)
What : Shabu-shabu (because everyone keeps asking for it)
Price : 2000 yen (all you can eat/drink (soft drinks))

So far, 9 people have been confirmed as going. Even mix of Japanese/non so far.

More details as they come. Details subject to change.

No jobs anywhere

Yeah, so this whole long term unemployment thing is really taking a hit at home.

Most every place by word of mouth/friend isn't hiring (or won't hire me anyways), and every place online I seem to find is a recruiter in disguise, they aren't hiring, or they give me an interview to show me how insane their company/environment is and *then* not offer me a job. I study up for the job, nothing, I research the companies and their projects beforehand, nothing, I brush up some skills, still nothing.

It's getting down to the wire here and conbini/photo tasks for Akudaikan aren't really cutting it bill-wise...help? Any kind of work is all right at this point.

Chako's Birthday Party (Akudaikan's GF), Mon Mar. 22

Just letting you know the details. That day is a holiday, and dinner will not start late, so it may be possible for out of towners to still make it with little problem

Place : Sizzler (Shinjuku)
Time : 6PM
Meet at the Shinjuku Eye around 5:45PM

Cost : ~3000 yen with all you can eat/drink everything-bar, but that is up to each person if you want more/something else

There will be a birthday cake and celebration (of sorts), so please feel free to come out if you can

Warning to those using craigslist to look for IT jobs in Japan

They all are thinly veiled posts from this Foreigner recruitment agency (maybe more accurately outsourcing sweatshop and bodyshopper based on how it reads:)

http://www.navix.jp/staff/

I got back replies from the jobs I applied to and they all were the same thing about "we are actually a recruitment agency, mwahahaha" and "please fill out this attached skill sheet and answer the following questions:"

1. Nationality and birth date (in Passport)
2. Visa status and expiration
3. Length of time living in Japan (How long have you been in Japan?)
4. Present location (address) and the nearest station in Japan
5. Desired work location
6. Desired employment type (Full/Contract/Haken/Part-time)
7. Availability (When can you start working?)
8. Your language ability
9. Current & Desired monthly salary (including taxes, insurances, over time allowance and the transportation fee etc.)
10. Are you available for working overtime?
11. Do you agree to be registered as a Navix staff? (If you are registered as a Navix staff, we keep your personal data for the future need when you might need another help from us in the case of job searching.)(It is Free.)"

Nothing wrong if that is what you are looking for, be just be warned that you aren't contacting some HR staff directly at these company job postings
